Update -- Day 5

We're staying in Skaftafell for a second night, just outside the national park. (We've travelled more than 1/4 of the way around Iceland so far. By end of day tomorrow, we'll be about half way around.)

Today, we went on a 3-hour hike in the park to the Svartifoss waterfall and Sel turf-roof farmhouse.

In the afternoon, we went to the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon. Huge chunks of ice break off from the Vatnajokull glacier, the largest in Europe, and clog the lagoon before breaking into smaller pieces and rushing into the sea. We went on an amphibious vehicle and got to eat ice cubes that were between 1,000 and 1,500 years old.

The James Bond movie Die Another Day (one of Brian's favs) was filmed in the lagoon. They dammed the lagoon to make it freeze for the movie and shot a car chase and other scenes on the ice.

The blue, white and black chunks of glacial ice floating around look surreal -- one of the most beautiful sights we've ever seen.
